Living on an amount below $3 per day on an average has been the standard definition for people suffering from extreme poverty.
The lack of purchasing power and the inability to deal with price rise, low income amid price rise is the major issue. Countries in Africa and
South Asia, have the highest number of people living in financial distress.
Extreme poverty or terms like multi dimensional poverty are needed to assess the real condition of masses and the economy, as locally and within
any particular country, the benchmarks and parameters can be changed internally to suit political dispensation & give impression that population
of poor is less or high.
Despite efforts and schemes to tackle poverty, these countries still form the major part of the population that is classified as poor in the world.
Civil war in African countries or the natural disasters in South Asian countries, make it difficult to bring about a change, fast.
Flood and drought force people to shift. Coastal regions too deal with such disasters. Bangladesh is an example. Disasters due to coast, affect large section.
India started rural job guarantee scheme and also ensures that the poor get grains and the necessary articles to have such families get their meals.
It lifted tens of millions out of poverty in the last two decades. Still, due to the size of the countries and the large population.
COUNTRIES WITH HIGHEST NUMBER OF POOR IN THE WORLD
Nigeria, Congo and Ethiopia are among the countries with a huge poor population. Due to its huge size, India accounts with one of the largest population of poor in
the world.
Along with India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, form another block that has been battling poverty, especially, acute poverty. Then, Tanzania, Kenya and Afghanistan are among the
nations that too suffer from multi dimensional property.
If living under dollar 3 is taken as a standard method to assess it, then Nigeria has over 100 million people that fall in this category, followed by Congo
(90 million), Ethiopia (80 million), India (75 million), Pakistan (75) million.
Mozambique and Madagascar also have huge populace living in penury. But, if the overall global multidimensional poverty is considered, then data suggests
that India could have the highest number of poor.
In fact, extrapolation and estimate even suggest 160-234 million poor in India. War-ravaged and insurgency affected nations face economic issues. In South America too,
poverty is an issue that gets less attention at the global level.
